A regional hub for local culture, art, history, learning and social interaction has been awarded the FDF Stanley Award for Public Architecture at this year’s Queensland Architecture Awards.
The design for the Caboolture Hub from Peddle Thorp + James Cubitt Architects is over 5000m² and consists of a modern library, regional art gallery, learning centre and café. The jury noted that the building, which sits alongside the Caboolture Town Square, “creatively earns its title ‘hub’.” Maximising the amount of natural light through large windows, the layout of the building is fluid and connects to the area that surrounds it.
An inspired design that turned a four-room cottage into a six-room home took out the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture (Houses). Designed by Owen and Vokes, Four-Room Cottage has a perimeter circulation spine that provides access to the main areas of the home and leads onto a series of garden terraces.
Recognised for its outstanding quality, Pie Residence in Peregian Beach by Geoffrey Pie Architects was awarded the Enduring Architecture Award. An entrant in the 1986 awards, the jury at the time noted Pie Residence was “a house in the spirit of Robin Boyd”.
Other notable winners included the St Leo’s College Entry by Ferrier Baudet Architects, which took out the Art and Architecture Prize, and Arkhefield & Cardno SPLAT’s River Quay design which was awarded both the Beatrice Hutton Award for Commercial Architecture and the Karl Langer Award for Urban Design.
