Australian International Design Awards
The future looks positive for Australian designers following the 2012 Australian International Design Awards.
Australia’s oldest and most prestigious design awards, The Australian International Design Awards, hosted by Good Design Australia, were announced on the 20th of July and the future is looking bright for Australian design.
Judged against a common set of design principles that focus on innovation, form, function, quality, safety and sustainability, over 200 entries were split into nine categories in which one product was awarded the Design award for “Best in Category”.
Of particular importance was Australia’s strong presence amongst the awarded designs. Out of the nine Best in Category winners, eight were whole or partially designed in Australia.
Brandon Gien, managing director of Good Design Australia, was faced with the tough job of assessing this year’s vast array of submissions, which included innovative kitchen appliances, pool chlorinators and recycled carpet tiles. He suggested that the panel of judges were looking for submissions “with the wow-factor when it came to design detail, innovation and creativity”.
The Design Award is the one all entrants are after and this year the accolade went to Hollywood director James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenger Research Submersible — a Sydney-based submarine design that was praised for its attention to detail and ability to overcome many design constraints.
The Design Award for Sustainability (D4S) was awarded to Interface RAW, a unique modular system which allows for the re-use of carpet tiles in office fit-outs.
In its inaugural year, the Patron Prize was introduced to celebrate the best in Australian design. The 2012 accolade was given to the MineLab F3 Compact Metal Detector — another fantastic example of Australian design innovation.
Luxury Home Design readers will be pleased to hear that homeware and interior design featured strongly in this year’s submissions. Dishwashers, baby high chairs, air conditioners and washing machines all had a strong presence amongst submissions and no doubt we will be seeing these products splashed across the pages of Luxury Home Design in the near future.
