Design Space Juxtaposition

Designers are often tested by clients to transform traditional kitchens in to more contemporary-styled spaces.  Out with the old, in with the new is the way most people operate, after all.  But when KBDi member Gloria Rose was asked to juxtapose the two styles, she had a challenge on her hands.

2---Gloria-Rose2 2---Gloria-Rose

Gloria’s Client, a long established Sydney kitchen manufacturer, needed an impressive design solution for an Expo-Display-come-Showroom.  The Company had specific marketing objectives, and needed to appeal to both the traditional and contemporary desires of their target market.  The display space was limited – 8 metres by 3 metres overall – and the future relocation of the cabinetry to the Client’s showroom had to be considered.

This talented designer certainly rose to the challenge; Gloria’s design had more than a touch of class, and the two neighbouring kitchens shared just enough design elements to sit alongside each other without awkwardness.  Visitors to the Grand Designs expo were clearly impressed, as was Gloria’s client, with a successful sign up rate for their time and effort.

The judges at this year’s KBDi Design Awards saw much merit in Gloria’s design solution too, and awarded her the title for Australian Design Space 2013 (proudly sponsored by Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly).
