Hong Kong’s Mango Tree Elements celebrates new interior

Upmarket Hong Kong restaurant Mango Tree Elements has collaborated with Steve Leung Hospitality on an interior that combines Hong Kong modernity and ancient Thailand.

Located in the Elements mall in Tsim Sha Tsui, overlooking Victoria Harbour, the new interior revamp was led by Thai designer Mai Chongchaiyo.

First opened in 2013, the Thai-cuisine restaurant has become popular for its classical and contemporary fusions, in terms of both food and design.

The centrepiece of the new interior is arguably the Mango Tree column with wooden branches leading into the ceiling and looking out onto the harbour.

The mango symbol features throughout the restaurant, with mango flowers blending into the emerald palette of the chair fabrics and unique marble bar.

Monochrome graphics depict the ancient city of Ayutthaya, which was a prosperous trading port in the Kingdom of Siam dating back to 1350 and is now a part of Thailand.

“[We wanted] to define a stronger individuality for each restaurant zone. Thus, the entrance is distinguished by a façade crafted with characteristic Thai wood and bricked wall, the adjacent dining area is defined by vibrant and colourful floral pattern, leading towards the dramatic feel of the sea-view dining area,” Mr Chongchaiyo said in a statement.

“The lighting has also been thoughtfully arranged to bring the different areas to life. I drew inspiration from the ancient city of Ayutthaya, rethinking Thai classic architectural elements in a contemporary approach. The strong sense of Thai authenticity is integrated with a younger and more energetic vibe, creating a timeless yet edgy ambience,” he said.

Founded in 1997, Steve Leung Design Projects has worked on many projects in Hong Kong such as The Hampton, One LaSalle I, II, & III, and Inakaya.

Mango Tree Worldwide is planning to expand globally from 70 outlets to more than 100 locations worldwide by 2025.
