Plus Architecture reveals Kangaroo Point hotel design ahead of 2032 Olympics

Plans for a new boutique hotel at Kangaroo Point are in full swing, showcasing an exciting addition to Brisbane’s skyline in anticipation of the 2032 Olympic Games.

Plus Architecture recently unveiled the design for the Rotherham Hotel, set to be a contemporary urban oasis spanning 16 levels between the Dockside Marina and Story Bridge Hotel.

The project comes amidst uncertainties surrounding the redevelopment of the Gabba Stadium, making the Rotherham Hotel a beacon of progress in the city’s infrastructure landscape. MH Hotel Management, under the leadership of Grace Gao, acquired the Il Mondo Hotel site at 35 Rotherham Street in April 2022, paving the way for this transformative development.

The forthcoming development application is poised to be submitted in the coming weeks, outlining a vision for a 179-key hotel with a total floor area of 15,500 square meters. The initial designs promise a host of amenities, including wellness experiences, a rooftop infinity pool, entertainment spaces, conference facilities, and diverse dining options, catering to both guests and locals alike.

Plus Architecture principal Chrisney Formosa said the hotel would be aimed at the continued growth of an emerging traveller demographic. “The Rotherham Hotel will be a landmark international destination in Kangaroo Point, offering a harmonious blend of luxury, urbanity and nature,” Formosa said.

One of the standout features of the Rotherham Hotel’s design is its nod to Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge, which opened in 1940. The facade will boast large porthole windows reminiscent of the bridge’s foundations, coupled with green brickwork and striking geometric shapes, blending modernity with historical homage seamlessly.

Furthermore, the design ethos extends to the hotel’s landscaping strategy, with greenscaping integrated on every level. A unique cutaway tower element spanning all 16 stories will connect the ground-floor greenscaping to the rooftop, ensuring a cohesive and immersive experience for visitors throughout their stay.

The Rotherham Hotel’s unveiling marks a significant step forward in Kangaroo Point’s development trajectory, promising a sophisticated and vibrant addition to Brisbane’s hospitality and tourism offerings as the city gears up for the global spotlight of the 2032 Olympics.
