The Australian Institute of Architects, in collaboration with Master Builders Australia and technology provider Paid Inc, has launched ABIC Digital Contracts – a cloud-based platform bringing the widely used Australian Building Industry Contract (ABIC) suite into the digital era.
Publicly launched on 7 July, the platform is designed to support real-time collaboration between architects and builders, with features including digital signing, version tracking, compliance checks, and secure contract storage.
The move marks a significant milestone in modernising contract administration in Australia’s design and construction sectors.
Cameron Bruhn, CEO of the Australian Institute of Architects, said the transition addresses long-standing member feedback and aligns with the Institute’s ongoing push to update professional tools.
“ABIC contracts have long set the standard for fairness and clarity in architect-administered projects,” said Bruhn. “Making them digital is about improving how we work, without changing what works.”
According to Bruhn, the new platform will reduce administrative burden, increase efficiency and offer a more professional experience for all project stakeholders.
The ABIC suite, jointly developed by the Institute and Master Builders Australia, is recognised across the industry for its practical language and balanced legal protections. The digital version retains these hallmarks, while addressing frustrations with manual processes, especially for smaller practices.
Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia, said the platform reflects a shared industry goal to lift standards and improve operational transparency.
“We’re changing the culture of contracts in building and construction by delivering a digital solution that provides trust, transparency and efficiency for everyone involved,” said Wawn. “By streamlining approvals and ring-fencing payments, all parties can have greater confidence in how projects are managed.”
Technology partner Paid Inc has developed the platform specifically for the sector, with custom features such as editable templates, a single live version of each contract, and automated compliance tools. Paid Inc founder Clint Bartram said the tool empowers architects to better protect their clients.
Training resources, including step-by-step walkthroughs and live webinars, are now available to support users. Paper-based ABIC contracts will remain in circulation until 19 January 2026, before being phased out entirely.
