Positioned along the busy beachfront strip of Jetty Road, Messina Glenelg reimagines the gelato shop as a vibrant social interior shaped by memory, movement and the rituals of summer.
Rather than approaching the project as a conventional hospitality fit-out, the design embraces boldness as an architectural strategy, translating the joy of gelato into a highly public and deliberately engaging spatial experience.
Drawing inspiration from the saturated colours and visual intensity of southern Italian gelato stores, the interior references collective memories of crowded promenades, warm summer evenings and the anticipation of choosing a flavour. The store opens directly to the street, operating less as a contained commercial venue and more as an extension of Glenelg’s beachfront culture.
Influenced by both Sicilian gelato traditions and radical design movements, colour is used with precision throughout the project. Bright tones and illuminated elements create an immersive atmosphere without descending into visual chaos. Subtle references to arcade lighting and competing vendor carts inject energy into the interior, giving the space an instinctive sense of excitement that feels embedded in the experience rather than overtly styled.
The planning prioritises openness and circulation, allowing the venue to comfortably absorb peak summer crowds while remaining functional during quieter trading periods. Fixed seating is intentionally limited, reflecting the transient nature of gelato consumption as a fleeting social ritual. Banquettes and high tables offer moments of pause while maintaining the overall flow of movement through the space.
Material selections reinforce the project’s robust and accessible character. Illuminated panels, reflective surfaces and custom insertions generate depth and visual layering, while graphic interventions and lightboxes displaying photographs of Sicily ground the exuberant palette in a sense of place and lived experience. Stadium seating introduces a playful and faintly absurd quality, further reinforcing the project’s irreverent tone.
By engaging directly with the public realm, Messina Glenelg contributes to the social rhythm of the strip and strengthens the civic identity of the beachfront precinct. Through its approachable use of colour and openness, the project positions gelato as a cross-cultural and multi-generational connector, demonstrating how hospitality interiors can foster collective experiences that linger long after the moment has passed.
