Esrawe + Cadena designs immersive Xinú fragrance showroom in Oaxaca

Mexican design studio Esrawe + Cadena has transformed a compact retail space in Oaxaca into a contemplative environment for its fragrance brand Xinú, creating an atmospheric showroom that draws on the region’s volcanic landscape and archaeological history.

Located within the courtyard of a colonial residence that is now home to the renowned Criollo restaurant, the showroom marks a decade since the launch of the Xinú fragrance brand.

Rather than adopting a conventional retail fit-out, the designers have created an immersive space that encourages visitors to engage with scent through architecture, materiality and light.

The interior is wrapped entirely in matte black, establishing a subdued backdrop for a sculptural installation formed from stacked black cement blocks. Rising from the centre of the room like a stepped pyramid before extending into a staggered cliff at the rear, the composition references the distinctive basalt prism formations found at San Antonio el Mogote, a geological and archaeological site in north-west Oaxaca.

According to Esrawe + Cadena, the arrangement was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a temple and altar.

“Its logic, repetition, verticality, horizontality and variation translate into a topography of volumes in soil and black cement, placed in such a way that evoke a temple and an altar,” the studio said.

The stepped structure functions as both display and storytelling device. Each level presents objects that reinforce the brand’s connection to nature, including dried botanical specimens, incense, stones and Xinú’s fragrance collection. Selected concrete blocks are also embossed with leaf impressions, allowing the subtle forms of native plant species to emerge as changing light creates shifting patterns of shadow across the surface.

Brand messaging has been engraved directly into the walls in both Spanish and English, with discreet spotlighting ensuring the text remains visible without interrupting the subdued atmosphere.

Natural light plays a central role in the experience. A single rectangular opening in the ceiling introduces a shaft of daylight that moves gradually across the room throughout the day, illuminating the sculptural display and drifting incense smoke.

The result is a highly considered retail environment where architecture, landscape and sensory design combine to create an experience that extends well beyond the traditional fragrance showroom, demonstrating how spatial design can deepen a brand’s narrative and strengthen emotional engagement.
