Trend Direct From Milan
The annual Milan Furniture Fair held every April, showcases thousands of products from international designers of furniture, lighting and furnishings. The atmosphere was more subdued than previous years given Europe’s economic climate, but there were many exciting new trends emerging from the six-day trade event.
Their predominant focus was on detail and colour this year. Pastels were very popular with designers such as Patricia Urquiola who used pastel colour to give her Clarissa Hood Chair a bold statement. The geometric but comfortable chair was designed for the Italian brand Moroso.
Clustered lighting was another prominent trend explored by designers such as Jean Marc Gardy, Vuorivirta and Rossana Orlandi. Jean Marc Gardy’s crinoline chandelier was a tasteful modern appropriation of a classic. Phillipe Stark designed a collection of intricate and decorative 24 light chandeliers, one of them featuring three glass deer heads.
Italian designers for brands such as Ceccotti and Porada used natural materials such as bamboo, silk and ratten to create open and transparent furniture structures. The striking ‘Fusion’ lamp collection designed by Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana is also evocative of this particular style.
