Congratulations to the DesignInc team for winning the Staron Design Awards in the Commercial Category. Their exceptional interior fit-out within PHIVE – Parramatta Civic Hub features Staron across various areas of the project, showcasing the material’s versatility and aesthetic appeal. Staron was selected for its durability and low-maintenance qualities, which are essential in high-traffic spaces.
Additionally, its translucent properties aligned perfectly with the project’s design aesthetic. Staron brings a striking visual element to the project, with backlit panels creating an impressive welcome for visitors. A large reception counter, created from Staron in Dazzling White, serves as a prominent landmark within the foyer, seamlessly transitioning into a dynamic mural from the main desk. The ‘Waves of People’ mural—a backlit installation that tells the stories of immigrants and Indigenous communities who have shaped Parramatta’s vibrant culture over time.
Phive is more than just a library. Designed by DesignInc in collaboration with Manuelle Gautrand and Lacoste+Stevenson, this project emerged as the winner of an international design competition to create a new city landmark—a place for locals and visitors to meet, discover, learn, and connect.
This new library building is an architectural icon, celebrated for its imaginative, recognisable, and adaptable design. Sustainability, accessibility, and inclusiveness are at its core, underscored by a vibrant red and orange tessellated roof inspired by local flora. The triangular form of the roof is carefully sculpted to follow the winter sun, reducing shadows over Parramatta Square. Inside, white triangulated ceilings of perforated aluminium reflect the red hues of the exterior, creating a seamless connection between the exterior and interior designs.
In 2024, Phive was awarded the Australian Library and Information Association’s Public Library Award in the Large Category. Though modest in scale compared to its towering neighbours, the building commands attention with its striking design and thoughtful architectural details.
A true civic landmark in the heart of Sydney, the restored Parramatta Town Hall—reopened 140 years after its original debut in 1883—balances sensitivity with modernity, remaining a key gathering place for the community.
Staron was also used for wall cladding, shelving display cabinets, and other joinery throughout the project. We are thrilled to see Staron play a role in this inspiring space.
The Staron Design Awards remain open accepting entries for 2025, with categories in Commercial, Residential, and Concept. We encourage designers to showcase their innovative uses of Staron.
