Window Blinds – the Different Options
Let’s talk window Blinds – the different options and why you might choose one over the other in your home – starting with the most common, Roller Blinds.

Roller Blinds
There’s good reason why Roller Blinds are so popular, they’re incredibly versatile and customisable, can be automated, are suitable for every room of the home, and are easy to clean and cost effective.
Available in plain or patterned fabrics, light filtering or blockout, Roller Blinds do everything from control light to block out heat and glare.
You can also use a Double Roller that combines a block out and sunscreen or sheer Roller in one – giving you diffused light during the day, and privacy and darkness at night. It also offers double the insulation benefits.
In theatre rooms or nurseries where you want complete darkness, it’s worth using a Pelmet or Cassette and side channels to conceal the hardware and prevent any light from peeping through.
When it comes to the right look for your home, generally in modern homes people opt for a minimalist, neutral style while in traditional style homes, such as country, more decorative patterns and trims, such as a scalloped finish, are used.

Roman Blinds
For something a bit softer, Roman Blinds are a great solution. They combine the functionality of Blinds with the decorative impact of soft furnishings.
You can have these made in the same fabric as Roller Blinds or Panel Blinds – allowing you to mix Blind styles throughout your home while the consistent fabric creates a sense of continuity.
Or for something more decorative, choose a Curtain fabric for your Roman Blind – with Australia’s largest choice of fabrics, you’re sure to find just the right option for your colour scheme or style. And with dollar curtains + blinds adding an extra layer of lining to all their soft Roman Blinds, these have double the thermal insulation.
As you can see, there’s more than just one style of Roman Blind. You can select a plain finish for a streamlined look, or a narrow or wide stack height.
You can also add a contrast band, scarf, fringe or scallop to the end to add a decorative element.
It’s also possible to automate Roman Blinds and these can be finished with a custom upholstered Pelmet.
Depending on the style of fabric and finish you select, Roman Blinds can suit almost any style of home from modern to period styles. Generally speaking, minimalist styles suit modern and more embellishments suit traditional.
Something to keep in mind though is that Curtain fabric Roman Blinds can be a little more difficult to clean so you may want to avoid these in kitchens and bathrooms.
Cellular Blinds
Cellular Blinds or Honeycomb Blinds are another option that’s gaining popularity. Similar to Roller Blinds, these are a discreet and modern option that serve a range of functions – but with the added benefit of thermal properties to keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
These can also be custom made to open from the bottom up (like a Roller Blind) or top down, or both, making them ideal for rooms with high windows or that face the street where you want to maintain privacy but have a view to outside.
Cellular Blinds can also be automated and are available in sheer, translucent or blockout fabrics, or a combination of a blockout and translucent. Again, making them suitable for main living areas or bedrooms.
They are the ideal Blind solution if improving your home’s insulation is a priority. They also offer sound absorption to keep outside noises out, have smaller light gaps, are dust resistant and easy to clean.
A popular option is to recess fit blockout Cellular Blinds or Roller Blinds within the window frame, or even on the architraves or wall above, and dress the window with a Curtain, such as a Wave Fold Sheer Curtain, in front.
Venetian Blinds
Venetian Blinds are another option that’s ideal for every room of the home. You can choose from timber or aluminium in narrow or wide blade sizes.
Depending on the colour you select, Venetian Blinds can suit traditional style homes or modern.
They can be a bit of a dust collector though so if you or someone in your family suffers from allergies, a Roller Blind or Cellular Blind would be a better option.
Vertical Blinds
Vertical Blinds are a functional and economical option. They offer excellent privacy control and rotate to allow you to direct sunlight. This style of Blind is becoming less common as Panel Blinds and Roller Blinds gain popularity.
Panel Blinds
Panel Blinds operate in a similar way to Vertical Blinds although the panels are much wider, creating a more minimalist and contemporary look.
These are ideal to use in front of a sliding door where you want the window covering to open in the same direction as the door.
