Kitchen at Heart of Thornbury Home Designed for Entertaining

In Thornbury, an extension known as A House to Gather puts the kitchen firmly at the centre of family and social life.

Designed for a young couple celebrated for their generous hospitality, the project transforms a modest single-fronted workers’ cottage into a versatile space that can accommodate everything from a weeknight dinner for two to a long festive lunch for thirty.

The brief was simple yet ambitious: more light, more open space, and a strong connection to the backyard, all within a compact footprint.

The extension replaces half of the original cottage with a new two-storey volume while an interior renovation updates the remaining spaces. The design cleverly layers uses within a single central room, ensuring the kitchen and dining areas are fully integrated. This configuration allows the owners to interact with their guests while preparing food, highlighting the performative aspects of hosting. Three skylights above the kitchen provide generous natural light, including direct sunlight during the golden hour, accentuating the vibrancy of the space.

The kitchen itself is a statement of colour and function. Emerald green joinery is paired with a bottle-green splashback featuring custom tiles designed by a local artist and friend of the owners, creating a striking backdrop for food preparation and social gatherings. The layout and furnishings are highly adaptable: the couch doubles as a dining bench, the dining table can become an impromptu kitchen island during cocktail parties, and the adjoining deck acts as a spill-out area for alfresco dining. Built-in seating encourages guests to flow seamlessly between inside and out, turning the home into an extension of the social experience.

Spatial planning emphasises flexibility and efficiency. Every element is designed to support the various ways the owners host, from intimate dinners to larger celebrations, while still feeling comfortable and personal. By prioritising the kitchen as the hub of the home, the architects have created a space where preparation, dining, and entertaining occur simultaneously, making hosting effortless and engaging.

A House to Gather demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate a modest site and budget into a home tailored for connection. The kitchen is not simply a place for cooking but the heart of the home, where colour, light, and functionality combine to support a lifestyle centred on generosity, conversation, and shared meals.
