Amberglow: Studio Becky Carter Brings Warmth to Loma Bar

New York-based Studio Becky Carter has reimagined the compact 450-square-foot interior of Loma, a bar in Providence, Rhode Island, by embracing vintage aesthetics and warm, moody lighting. Through thoughtful use of materials like amber glass and terracotta tiles, the space reflects the cultural roots of its owners—Leishla Maldonado, who comes from a Puerto Rican background, and Guatemalan-born brothers Osman and Yefri Cortave.

The owners envisioned an intimate “vintage Latin bar” feel, a concept Studio Becky Carter brought to life with meticulous attention to detail. “From the beginning, the three owners of Loma knew they wanted their space to feel welcoming, warm, tucked away,” said Carter.

Amber glass plays a key role in creating the inviting atmosphere. Two street-facing windows feature a second pane of textured amber glass, which diffuses natural light and casts a caramel glow across the bar. The light is further enhanced by 1970s Italian cast-glass sconces, whose dynamic shadows dance on lime-washed walls, adding depth and intrigue to the space.

To amplify the warmth, Carter employed a darker, monotone palette throughout the interior, wrapping it in terracotta hues reminiscent of Latin American interiors. Terracotta tiles cover the floor and also clad cylindrical side tables designed to hold drinks. Custom mahogany elements, such as a partition with rectangular cutouts and a lacquered bar, lend a tactile richness.

Vintage and second-hand furniture, sourced in collaboration with the owners, complements the space. Locally crafted pieces by Transom Woodwork, including a velvet-upholstered banquette, tie the design together.

Loma’s bar is designed to be both intimate and functional, featuring only four stools to encourage conversation between Maldonado and her guests. A curated selection of liquor bottles is displayed behind the bar, while drinks are made with hand-chiselled ice blocks, emphasising craft and detail.

Through its design, Loma offers a warm and layered experience, where amber light, tactile materials, and thoughtful details unfold over time. For guests, it’s a sensory journey that feels both grounded in tradition and distinctly modern.
