Bamboo Reimagined: Element’s Curatorial Pop-up

The Element pop-up store at HKRI Taikoo Hui offers a fresh take on curatorial retail spaces, presenting a sophisticated yet unconventional exploration of sustainable design and material innovation. Designed by llLab., this space blends the principles of Element’s sustainable branding philosophy with groundbreaking material research.

Showcasing an ethereal landscape of bamboo that speaks to both environmental consciousness and advanced design practice, at the heart of the project is bamboo, a material long associated with traditional Eastern architecture but reimagined in this installation for its sustainability and versatility. In this third phase of llLab.’s bamboo research, the Element Bloom pop-up store and TURN TURN exhibition installation form an interconnected narrative, where bamboo, only 3mm thick, flows like a delicate landscape throughout the space. This exploration challenges preconceived notions about bamboo, pushing the boundaries of its application from construction to aesthetic expression.

Previous phases of llLab.’s bamboo research include the Bamboo Bamboo project in Yangshuo, Guilin, where bamboo was crafted into pavilions and canopies, and the Bamboo Clouds installation in New York, which transported the essence of nature across continents. Now, in this third phase, the studio delves deeper into the material’s microscopic properties, creating a space that transcends traditional perceptions of bamboo. The fibres of the bamboo transform into objects, structures, and even walls, creating a seamless blend of nature and design.

The Element pop-up store not only serves as a retail space but also as an immersive experience, bridging macro perception with micro perspective. Visitors are invited into a world where the properties of bamboo are showcased in innovative ways, offering a sustainable and visually striking environment that embodies resilience, flexibility, and elegance.

In reimagining bamboo through this curatorial lens, the Element pop-up store is more than a retail space – it is a testament to how material sustainability and design can coexist to create an unparalleled spatial experience.
