CKD Rina Cohen donates award-winning kitchen to charity
When KBDi member and Certified Kitchen Designer Rina Cohen designed and entered this kitchen into the KBDi Design09 Awards series she could not have foreseen the opportunities it would create. As the winner of the Best Medium Kitchen Designer Victoria 2009 award and Kitchen Designer of the Year Victoria 2009, the kitchen was replicated for display at the Home Ideas Centre in Oakleigh East, Victoria.
At the end of the display period in May 2011, the kitchen (including appliances) will be auctioned with all proceeds going to Rina’s charity of choice, Try Youth and Community Services.
Utilising a mix of blond wood and white cabinets with sleek marble surfaces and a modern, mirrored splashback, the kitchen was created by Rina and her team of sponsors who donated their time, design expertise, materials and appliances.
The KBDi judges felt the kitchen not only met the brief to provide a space in which to cook, live and entertain but enhanced the home’s architecture. “A blend of soft colours matched with a honed classic Carrara marble stone slab, brings a softness as it is bathed in natural light,” they said. “This kitchen functions well with a high level of aesthetic appeal, while maintaining a contemporary edge to the design”.
Rina’s association with Try Youth and Community Services began when she assisted the growing charity to move to larger premises and, when the opportunity arose to use her award-winning kitchen to generate funds for such a worthy cause, Rina did not demur.
“I thought long and hard about choosing a charity,” she explains. “TRY was established in 1883 and still embodies the spirit of its founder William Mark Foster who believed in the innate ability of young people assuring them if they were prepared to ‘try’ they would be amazed at what they could accomplish. The Chairman of the Board Helen Robinette and the CEO Damien Mowlam are amazing in their vision, leadership and commitment to the longevity of TRY and I would encourage everyone to visit the website to realise the depth and breadth of what TRY does at so many levels. I sincerely hope the kitchen brings a generous sum as they are so deserving of the proceeds”.
Helen Robinett, Chairman of Try Youth and Community Services, says “We are delighted that Rina’s generosity and talent has been recognised and rewarded by this prestigious industry award. And we look forward to the auction in May, when we raise funds for our much-needed children and youth services”.
The auction will be held at 6pm on Friday 27th May and we invite all interested bidders to attend. The kitchen can be viewed at any time between now and the auction date. See www.homeideas.com.au for display centre opening hours.
