Lighthouse Becomes Eindhoven’s Tallest Residential Tower

Eindhoven has a striking new addition to its skyline with the completion of Lighthouse, a 109 metre residential tower designed by De Zwarte Hond.

Located in the Strijp S district, the building is now the tallest residential structure in the city and forms a new landmark at the entrance to the neighbourhood together with the historic Klokgebouw.

The project delivers 333 rental apartments ranging from 40 to 110 square metres, along with nine penthouses on the uppermost floors. The plinth and lower levels accommodate commercial and social facilities that contribute to the precinct’s growing activity.

Lighthouse completes the West8 led masterplan for Strijp S, a former Philips industrial area that has been steadily transformed into a mixed use precinct. Positioned between the Klokgebouw and the Machinekamer and opposite the Gloeilampplantsoen, the tower has been designed as a vertical brick sculpture that responds to its historic surrounds. A lantern feature crowns the building and the facade lighting pays tribute to the district’s industrial and lighting heritage.

The architecture emphasises workmanship through consistent attention to materiality and detailing. Brick, concrete, aluminium and glass define the tower envelope. As the form tapers, horizontal lines reveal communal roof gardens and enhance the building’s diagonal profile. A serrated facade motif links the structure to the colonnade adjacent to the Machinekamer, where the main residential entrance and amenities are located.

Each residence includes a private outdoor space integrated into the tower volume. South facing dwellings feature generous indoor balconies while north facing homes contain loggias that help to buffer noise from the nearby railway. The basement houses bicycle storage and technical services which allows the ground plane to remain open and active. Public amenities on the first two levels frame Machinekamerplein and support the creation of a liveable high rise community. Additional shared roof terraces offer social spaces at various heights.

The project was delivered by SDK Vastgoed with Visser and Smit Bouw. De Zwarte Hond led the design process, ensuring urban planning, spatial quality and financial feasibility were balanced throughout. Large floor to ceiling windows maximise natural light and views while creating deep alcoves that enhance liveability and rental efficiency. Lighthouse was completed in October 2025, marking a significant milestone in Eindhoven’s ongoing urban renewal.
