In the heart of Stockholm’s historic Birger Jarl Passage, a striking fusion of architecture, culture and cuisine has emerged with the reopening of Misshumasshu, designed by Swedish architect Maja Bernvill.
The restaurant’s transformation marks a significant moment in the adaptive reuse of the heritage-listed arcade, bringing a bold spatial and sensory experience to life.
The new Misshumasshu spans 800 square metres with six-metre-high ceilings and a central daylight roof, creating a voluminous interior anchored by a dramatic red palette. Bernvill’s vision pays homage to both Japanese and Swedish traditions, referencing Japanese lacquerware and temples alongside Swedish Falu red cottages and carved Dala horses. The result is a rich, contemporary interpretation of cultural exchange.
“A generous setting, one that welcomes return visits, in any season, at any hour,” says Bernvill. “We embrace deep red tones as a unifying link between Japanese and Swedish culture.”
Catering for around 150 guests, the restaurant features a centrally placed bar that draws the eye along the passage, while smaller, intimate dining rooms have been carefully interwoven around the historic arcade. The layout ensures a continuous sense of flow, blurring the boundaries between restaurant, bar and social meeting place.
Misshumasshu continues the ongoing partnership between Bernvill and celebrated chef duo Adam & Albin. It follows the success of Solen, their previous project which helped position Stockholm’s meatpacking district as a culinary destination and earned accolades including Residence magazine’s Grand Design Prize and the international iF Design Award.
With Misshumasshu’s reopening, the collaboration once again highlights the dynamic interplay between design and gastronomy. Bernvill’s sculptural and atmospheric approach brings a new layer of vibrancy to the historic space, proving that heritage architecture, when thoughtfully reimagined, can serve as a powerful canvas for modern expression.
