“The clients wanted a respectful makeover showing consideration to the heritage of this New Zealand villa — the result was a striking, monochrome bathroom. The room uses geometry through the simple angular lines of the white brick-bond tiles, pedestal basin, sash-hung window and toilet. Behind the freestanding bath, the bath filler on floor legs acts as a sculptural feature against the soft light from the window. The bright white of the tiles, basin, bath and toilet is contrasted dramatically with the charcoal-tiled floor, showing off the black features of the lever handles and toilet seat. The black and white palette allows the introduction of natural elements to embellish or complement the room, such as the antique timber stool. The use of strong, singular pieces gives the room a sense of space, while the use of monochrome colour creates drama and contrast.”
