Riverside Performance Hall Puts Fibre Cement to Work

When Keystone Architects designed the new Performance Hall at Riverside Christian College in Maryborough, Queensland, the brief called for a space capable of supporting performances, assemblies and everyday school activities while providing a durable environment for students and the wider community.

Material selection was central to achieving those requirements, with Vetérro, a high-density, through-coloured fibre cement cladding system from HVG Facades, specified across both the exterior and interior of the new facility.

The Performance Hall forms part of Riverside Christian College’s ongoing investment in its campus facilities and performing arts program. Designed by Keystone Architects and built by Torbay Constructions, the building required materials capable of withstanding a high-traffic educational environment while contributing to the hall’s architectural identity.

Vetérro was selected in a combination of Terracotta, Natural, Grey and Dark Grey finishes. Externally, the Terracotta panels provide the hall with a warm, tactile facade, while the lighter and darker finishes continue internally to contribute to the character and acoustic qualities of the space.

The through-coloured composition means colour extends through the panel rather than relying solely on a surface coating, helping provide a consistent appearance at exposed edges and cut-outs. The high-density fibre cement is also designed for durability and resistance to impact, scratching, weather and UV exposure, making it suited to demanding education and community applications.

For architects and specifiers, the material also offers a number of performance considerations. Vetérro is deemed non-combustible, is suitable for rear-ventilated facade systems and is supported by an Environmental Product Declaration. The manufacturer also provides dedicated installation documentation, including a top-hat fixing system and installation sequence guide.

The product’s format was another consideration for the project. Available in standard lengths of 2.5 and 3.05 metres, the panels can be used across a range of applications, while the through-coloured material allows for clean edges and cut-outs without exposing a contrasting substrate.

For Riverside Christian College, the result is a performance-focused building that also contributes to the character of the wider campus. The project demonstrates how material specification can respond simultaneously to the practical demands of education environments and the desire to create spaces that feel distinctive and welcoming.

As schools increasingly incorporate specialist facilities that serve both students and their broader communities, projects such as the Riverside Performance Hall highlight the role building materials can play in delivering spaces designed for long-term use, resilience and shared experience.
