Rose Seidler House Open Day

Celebrate the life and work of internationally acclaimed architect Harry Seidler when the Historic Houses Trust hosts a free open day at Rose Seidler House on Sunday 6 March from 10am to 5pm.

See inside the house Seidler designed for his parents, Max and Rose, at Wahroonga and his first Australian commission, which marked the beginning of a long and remarkable career.

From 12pm to 2pm join conservation planner Sheridan Burke and architect Scott Robertson for a talk on how we value our architectural history including our perception of the worth of our houses, the design principles that underpin them and the notion of permanence in our architectural heritage.

Throughout the day there is also a chance to view rarely seen Seidler home movies about the construction of some of Harry’s earliest works, including Blues Point Tower at McMahons Point and the Marcus Seidler House in Turramurra.

Enjoy a lunchtime sausage sizzle, cakes, tea, coffee and other goodies, available for purchase from the local Waitara Scouts Group, and browse the book stall’s range of specialist architecture and design titles.

Rose Seidler House was the most talked about house in Sydney when it was built in 1948-1950, featuring open planning and minimalist design and all the mod cons and appliances of the day.
In the decades after it was built, Harry Seidler designed many important, innovative, controversial and award-winning residential and commercial buildings, introduced new ideas and construction techniques and made a major contribution to Australian architecture.

Harry and Penelope Seidler generously donated Rose Seidler House and its contents to the state of New South Wales as a house museum to be managed by the Historic Houses Trust in 1988.
