Jugaad Urbanism Exhibition: Resourceful Strategies for Indian Cities
Set in the radically uneven urban landscapes of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune in India, Jugaad Urbanism: Resourceful Strategies for Indian Cities explores how the energy of citizens “making do” is translated by architects, urban planners, and governmental and nongovernmental entities into efficient and inventive strategies for sustainable urban growth.
From energy-generating spinning wheels to the extensive skywalks of Mumbai, the exhibition highlights how “jugaad” interventions (a Hindi term that describes innovative, resourceful ideas) are challenging traditional spatial hierarchies and mechanistic planning principles. The concept of “jugaad” urbanism is explored through dozens of industrial design, urban design, transportation and architecture projects.
The exhibition and related programs are organised by AIA New York in partnership with the Center for Architecture Foundation, the India China Institute at The New School, the Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC) and the Society of Indo-American Engineers and Architects (SIAEA).
