Yukari Tanabe has been crowned a “dream-weaver”, taking out the 2011 Dreamweaver Design Award title at the award presentation held in Melbourne. Yukari is a graduate textile designer in the final year of her Diploma in Textile Design and Development at RMIT University, Melbourne.
Her design is called “Hana”, which is the general term for flowers in Japanese. Her winning weave captures her love of nature and explores the changing relationship we have with nature in this, an urbanised world.
“For me, these flowers are simple but beautiful, small yet striking, enduring reminders of the natural world we seem so keen to cover with concrete and asphalt. Their charm, and the pleasure they give me, inspire me in my daily life,” she says.
“By working with simple yet bold organic motifs, stylised to be slightly abstract, I intend my designs to be a strong reminder that even in the urban environment, we still need some nature in our daily lives.”
Yukari took home $500 in prize money and has also been granted work experience opportunities with furniture, curtain and blind manufacturers as well as at Warwick Fabrics Design Studio and an Australian weaving mill.
Along with the designs of the other finalists, Elouise Roberts and Marisa Sinopoli, Yukari Tanabe’s design has been upholstered onto a piece of furniture by Colby Furniture, Furniture Inspirations and Visionary Furniture Design.
