The Learning Curve
When designer Haris Bahtiyarov, of Alby Turner & Son in Adelaide, was given the task of designing a new kitchen for the seaside home of his clients, his ‘out of the square’ approach proved to be a winner in more ways than one.
Haris’ clients were open-minded and willing to experiment, and specifically wanted their home to reflect its beach location. This designer stepped out of the seaside stereotypes, however, and used gentle curves and sandy colours to emulate the ocean elements nearby.
A softly curved island bench is the focal point of the kitchen, and its gentle geometry is replicated in the curved cabinetry below. Doors and drawers are finished in a sandy-pearl coloured gloss, and perfectly complement the 30mm thick ‘Wild Seas’ granite with its green, sandy and black tones. A vertical Jarrah veneer adds warmth, and contrasts beautifully with the bamboo flooring. A solid Jarrah top and slab ends complete the picture, and carefully link the kitchen with the adjoining outdoor deck.
Of course the kitchen is as functional as it is beautiful. Storage is plentiful and well thought out, and soft closing features to all cabinets and drawers ensure smooth operation. A free standing stove (integrated kick) with ceramic surface and touch control takes pride of place beneath a black glass rangehood, and both appliances provide a practical cooking solution for the keen cooks.
Visitors to the home continue to be wowed by the transformation Haris created, as were judges in this year’s KBDi Design 2013 Awards. Haris’ design secured him the award for ‘Small Kitchens SA’, giving the South Australian designer yet another trophy for his growing collection.
