New Home & Architecture program

Sydney Living Museums has revealed its innovative Home & Architecture program — a 12 month celebration of Sydney’s architectural history including design and architecture exhibitions, tours, talks, and workshops.

The program launched with Iconic Australian Houses: an exhibition by Karen McCartney which opened at Museum of Sydney on 12 April. Running until 17 August, the exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes exploration of 30 of the most important Australian homes of the past 60 years, highlighting Australia’s distinct approach to home design.

“The inspiration for the program has been drawn from our 12 museums and historic houses, their unique architecture, design and interiors that defined and reflect the progression of homes in Australia,” says director of Sydney Living Museums, Mark Goggin.

“We have also brought together some of Sydney’s greatest architects, influential thinkers and knowledgeable home historians to curate compelling and immersive experiences and events including thought provoking tours showcasing lifestyle trends and workshops full of inspiration for home renovators, where you can explore the ways our homes and architecture continue to shape our lives,” says Mark.

Sydney Living Museums: Home & Architecture will also feature exhibitions of our most celebrated modern houses and a landmark international retrospective of legendary architect, Harry Seidler, showing at the Museum of Sydney.

The Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection reveals the intriguing history of houses, gardens and interiors as part of the program.

A new display, An Institutional Home at Hyde Park Barracks Museum, opening in July, uses Sydney Living Museums’ rich archaeology collection to transform one of the rooms to re-create the dormitory atmosphere young female immigrants would have experienced during their stay.
