The AIA has released its platform for the Federal Election

In light of the impending Federal Election this month the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) has released its 2019 federal election platform.

It is aimed at providing health and wellbeing to Australians as well as fostering the prospective creativity in the architecture and design industries.

Their platform has identified six key areas that they want the Government to address in building equitable, affordable and sustainable places:

1. Fostering thriving cities and regions – places and communities delivered by the government and industry that are built and connected in a way that enhances liveability, wellbeing, sustainability and productivity.
2. Housing a diverse and inclusive community – they recognize Australia facing a major housing problem in terms of availability, accessibility and affordability.
3. Improving building regulation – they implore Australia to change the building regulatory environment regarding compliance with and enforcement of the National Construction Code (NCC).
4. Addressing climate change – the resilience of the country’s built environment must be enhanced to extreme weather events and any impacts from predicted climate change.
5. Capitalising on creativity – the AIA recognizes that Australian architects are reputed across the globe for their creative and innovative design and that Australia has been producing contemporary and breakthrough architecture that needs to be fostered.
6. Supporting Australian skills and trade – governments must support Australian skills and expertise

The AIA says there is a huge scope for the incoming government to effect meaningful change provided they have the capacity to implement these recommendations. The key areas that the AIA has identified in their platform represent the interests of almost all Australians. They believe that the government must address Australia’s current housing challenge of affordability, availability and accessibility. Specifically, they implore the government to do more to support the housing needs of Indigenous and aging Australians or those with a disability.

Clare Cousins from the AIA has also proposed that the upcoming federal government adopt a National Architecture Policy stating, “We believe the government can, and should, be doing far more to capitalise on the creativity of our homegrown design professionals and the worldwide reputation Australian architects have for creative and innovative design leadership.”

She added, “This too can pay a triple dividend, economically through the almost billion-dollar value architectural tourism brings to the economy, but also by creating buildings and public spaces that are environmentally and socially sustainable and culturally rich.”
