A competition to design a new residential district in Prague has been won by Benthem Crouwel Architects.
The competition, which was hosted by Penta Real Estate, in collaboration with local form RA15, saw 160 entries. However, the jury in an unanimous verdict, praised Benthem Crouwel’s decision to integrate a large, publicly accessible park into their design.
The new residential complex is located in the Nádraží Žižkov region of Prague, between a former freight station with abandoned train tracks and a more urban city landscape. The winning design strikes a balance between metropolitan functionality and contact with nature as the apartment buildings are situated at the edge of the plot creating a large, open central park.
Two large curved apartment complexes, with a combined 450 dwellings, surround the park. The park itself will be open to residents and locals, serving as a communal space for people to connect, relax and enjoy the outdoors. It also offers a biodiverse environment where local plant species can thrive.
The architects say that the design “offers its residents the best of both city and nature: highly functional apartments with optimal access to urban amenities, privacy within a community, and a lush, welcoming green park right at their doorstep.”
Architecturally, the modular units create a visually interesting façade which make optimal use of daylight. This modular system also fragments the building into a human scale, taking the design from a landmark urban building to a personal and lively collection of many united dwellings.
