'Comfort Town' residential village in Ukraine wins global award for use of colour
The bright colours of Comfort Town residential complex in Kyiv Ukraine turn an industrial area into a warm inviting neighbourhood.
Designed by local architects Archimatika, this dynamic development has taken out the title for the Best Use of Colour at the World Architecture Festival.

The festival was held in Amsterdam from December 4-6 and recognises the world’s most extraordinary completed and planned architecture in 2018.
Archimatika intended to restore the heart of the 40 hectare site and instigate growth in a historic neighbourhood.
The architects chose a system of irregular modular blocks of varying heights from 2 to 16 storeys that avoids repetition of form and colour.
Partly as a design choice and partly as a result of limited budget the architects used simple geometric shapes and flat facades that excluded balconies and decorative elements.
According to the architects, there were three techniques they focused on.
- Silhouette: different turns and height of dual-pitch roofs allowed to achieve an interesting shapes.
- Windows: it is the first housing project in Kyiv to use the French balcony system and the window shifting system, which allowed to avoid monotonous rows.
- Colour: it is the first daring colour solution for a residential neighbourhood in the country.
Inside the maze of blocks are large courtyards with evergreen trees, sculptures and a fountain that cannot be accessed by motor vehicles.
There are a total of 22 children’s parks that are looked after by a dedicated maintenance service.
Buildings that were formerly factories have been transformed into sport courts, cafés, businesses, a shopping centre, offices, and a publicly accessible 4600-square-metre fitness hub with three pools.
Also on the site is the Academy of Modern Education, a combined kindergarten, elementary school and high school for 1000 students.
