Situated in front of one of Canberra’s most idyllic parks, is the Crowne Plaza Hotel designed to be suited for both business and leisure travelers. This stunning commercial project was completed in 2020 by architectural firms Marchese Partners and GHD for Salter Brothers.
Canberra is known for being the “bush capital” of Australia, nestled amongst plenty of luscious greenery, gardens, parks and native vegetation. The Crowne Plaza’s 296 room hotel overlooks the city centre and Glebe Park, arguably one of the areas most beautiful, public parks.
The exterior of this affordable yet modern hotel showcases a strong geometric character using Cosentino’s ultra compact stone, Dekton Lunar. A carbon neutral product offering many advantages in its application as a façade.
This type of façade is referred to as a ventilated façade application. Which means the product has a gap between itself and the building to allow air to flow through, making this a more sustainable approach to architecture by saving energy on temperature control from the outside going inwards.
It is a low porosity surface, highly resistant to stains and scratches and very easy to maintain. In addition to these already appealing characteristics of this hybrid stone product, it withstands sudden changes in temperature and is a durable material that ensures a flawless appearance over time.
The colour and texture of Dekton Lunar is inspired by traditional cement, enhancing the overall industrial look of the building. While its white base makes it one of the most fashionable shades of grey and best suited to urban environments like Canberra.
Dekton by Cosentino is an ultra-compact stone sustainably manufactured to be their first carbon neutral product from cradle to grave. Extracted from nature itself and consisting of a sophisticated mixture of more than 20 minerals, the technological process to create Dekton is one that is a journey through extremely high temperatures and cooling process, then to being placed under immense pressure to bind the mineral particles for ultra strength and compactness.
The weight of pressure applied to Dekton after the intense temperature process is approximately 25,000 tons of uniformed pressure – the equivalent to 2.5 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower. This process ensures no micro defects or weak points and has almost a null porosity at state of completion.
The versatility and advanced technology during the manufacturing process makes Dekton the ideal application for even the most demanding conditions such as facades – able to withstand humidity, rain and frost.
