The Master Plumbers Association of NSW (MPA NSW) has called for immediate action on the allocation of government grants for heat pumps.
It says that both the NSW State Government and the Federal Government have allowed grants to be claimed for inferior models, creating a precarious situation that echoes past pitfalls.
“These inferior overseas models, heavily promoted through social media platforms at suspiciously low prices under $100, have raised red flags,” MPA chief executive Nathaniel Smith explains.
“It has come to our attention that these inferior units are sourced in bulk from overseas by organisations that may exhibit phoenix-like characteristics, stirring memories of past debacles.”
Expressing deep concerns, MPA NSW highlights the vulnerability of individuals subjected to inferior products funded by government grants. Comparing it to the infamous pink batts scheme, MPA urgently calls for a review, particularly before the Australian winter.
“We emphasise the dire consequences, forewarning of vulnerable individuals left without hot water during the coldest period of the year. To avert this impending crisis, MPA NSW urges a decisive shift towards promoting the installation of Australian-made or established brands, despite their higher cost,” Nathaniel says.
This measure should ensure that high-quality solutions are installed but the Association has also called for an investigation into how the oversights were included in the grants.
