MPA NSW Criticises Federal MP’s Call to Ban New Gas Developments

The Master Plumbers Association (MPA) of NSW has strongly rebuked the recent statement by Wentworth Federal MP Allegra Spender that urges the federal Labor Government to implement a gas ban in new developments across Australia.

Ms Spender proposed a ‘People Power Plan’ that, among other things, would aim to tax the windfall profits of the gas industry to secure the necessary capital to help close to half a million homes electrify over the next three years.

MPA NSW chief executive Nathaniel Smith says that the proposed plan threatens Australia’s energy security and endangers vulnerable citizens, particularly in the colder months of the year.

Additionally, the Association highlighted the essential role of gas in mitigating power outages, such as recent instances in Victoria.

“In a time when reliable energy sources are crucial for our nation’s welfare, misguided proposals like this only hinder progress,” Nathaniel says.

“We call upon policymakers to base their decisions on sound evidence and consider the broader implications on energy affordability, reliability and sustainability.”

Nathaniel adds that household gas emissions only contribute to 2% of total emissions.
