Earthy Elegance: Esiot Store in Athens

Nestled in the vibrant Exarcheia neighbourhood of Athens, the Esiot flagship store by interior architect Nancy Katri is a harmonious celebration of artisanal craftsmanship. The design masterfully channels the essence of leather, the foundational material for the brand’s handmade sandals and shoes, through warm, earthy hues and contrasting textures that mirror the duality of the material itself.

The store’s layout is divided into two distinct zones: the inviting front stage and the raw, authentic backstage. The front stage is characterised by a palette of terracotta, deep brown, burnt orange, and ivory, creating a rich and tactile experience. Smooth satin finishes evoke the supple surface of leather, while a poured concrete floor introduces a rugged contrast. Sculpted Styrofoam seating and podiums lend a contemporary edge, balancing form and functionality. Bespoke stainless-steel furniture, including a custom cash desk and mirrors designed by Katri, pairs seamlessly with ceramic accents crafted by local artists, emphasising the store’s commitment to handmade artistry.

Illumination plays a pivotal role in enhancing the space’s allure. Central spotlights draw attention to Esiot’s products, while globe wall fixtures brighten the corner storefront, inviting passersby to step inside. Behind a dramatic floor-to-ceiling curtain lies the backstage, a deliberate nod to the raw, rugged side of leather. Sanded metal finishes, exposed LED tube lighting, and a workshop aesthetic evoke the artisanal processes behind Esiot’s creations. This area maintains a visual connection to the rest of the store, with the basement as storage and a mezzanine for office space, creating a cohesive environment that bridges creativity and practicality.

Founded by Irene Sioti in 2014, Esiot epitomises Greek heritage and sustainability through its high-quality leather footwear. The flagship store reflects these values, blending artisanal techniques with contemporary design. By immersing visitors in the duality of leather and the craftsmanship of its making, Nancy Katri’s design transforms the retail experience into a journey through heritage, artistry, and innovation.
