Collingwood Studio Sparks Bold Design Thinking

In the heart of Collingwood, IF Architecture Studio has created a 100sqm space that functions as both a studio and an incubator for experimental design ideas.

The studio embraces its compact footprint as an opportunity to refine existing concepts, realise previously unexplored approaches, and explore a bold, distinctive point of view through vibrant colour, dynamic forms, and inventive spatial divisions.

The open plan interior is organised around interconnected zones shaped by adaptable multipurpose elements that maximise functionality. At its centre sits a formal meeting area, separated subtly by a double sided curtain. The curtain, finished in brilliant hues inspired by the iconic Tonight Show with Johnny Carson backdrop, acts as both a presentation screen on one side and a carefully considered visual feature on the reverse, maintaining sightlines to the entrance.

The kitchen is designed as a non-traditional, standalone volume that provides gentle separation while preserving openness. Vertical timber joinery meets organic galvanised steel to form a multifunctional surface that doubles as a secondary meeting space. Surrounding the bench are Iva’s namesake leather stools for Grazia & Co, a signature element used throughout IF Architecture’s residential and hospitality projects. Both the custom timber conference table and the kitchen bench employ a teardrop shaped strategy, originally developed for the Little Prince Dining Room, subtly orienting use towards specific directions and ensuring participants in meetings face the presentation screen.

Soft blue tones wash the space, balanced by galvanised steel for a sense of industrial familiarity. Warmth emerges through natural timber, cork joinery, brass accents, and tanned leather, while accessories echo the curtain’s bright colours with blue chairs, a green pendant, and a pink rug.

Open plan work areas are defined by a galvanised steel partition and raised flooring. Circular perforations in the partition provide privacy while maintaining visual connection. One side displays a curated library of published projects, while the opposite side holds prototypes, material samples, and the studio’s copy of Le Corbusier’s Polychromie.

A cork joinery volume introduces a vertical element, offering a dedicated space for traditional design pin ups and collaborative review. Flexible shelving behind panels allows the team to test materials, store objects, and keep the studio uncluttered. The overall design immerses clients in IF Architecture’s creative process, creating a vibrant and inspiring environment that reflects the studio’s experimental ethos and commitment to bold, inventive design.
