Dubai skate hub blends culture, retail and community

A new project in Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue is redefining the role of the skatepark, transforming it into a hybrid cultural destination that brings together sport, retail, hospitality and creative workspaces within a single, flexible environment.

Named Gooder, the development was conceived as a space that could bridge the gap between skaters and non-skaters, encouraging interaction while contributing to the wider creative identity of the precinct.

The brief challenged designers to rethink the traditional skate facility, evolving it into a social hub capable of hosting events, exhibitions and day-to-day community use.

At the centre of the project sits the skatepark, which acts as both a physical and conceptual anchor. Surrounding it are adaptable retail and hospitality zones, designed with modular fixtures and movable elements that allow the layout to shift in response to changing programs. This flexibility ensures the space can accommodate a broad range of uses, from informal gatherings to curated cultural activations.

Materiality plays a key role in reinforcing the project’s identity. Drawing on the DIY ethos of skate culture, the design incorporates a robust palette of brick, concrete, timber and metal. These materials were sourced locally where possible, supporting sustainability objectives while ensuring durability in a high-use environment. The raw finishes also lend the space an unpolished authenticity that aligns with its intended audience.

A sculptural fountain, inspired by traditional Damascus courtyards, introduces a strong cultural reference point within the contemporary setting. Positioned as a social focal point, it creates a moment of pause within the active environment and connects regional heritage with the energy of youth culture.

Gooder demonstrates how specialised sporting infrastructure can be reimagined as a broader cultural platform. By integrating flexible design strategies with a clear understanding of community needs, the project supports a diverse mix of activities while maintaining a cohesive identity.

As cities continue to prioritise mixed-use and experience-driven environments, Gooder offers a compelling model for adaptive design, where architecture facilitates both movement and meaningful social exchange.
