Steel Meets Taverna Tradition in Cronulla

Australian studio AP Design House has completed Homer Rogue Taverna, a 100-seat Greek restaurant in Cronulla that balances industrial materiality with the convivial spirit of Mediterranean dining.

Located within a newly constructed building, the project offered the design team a high degree of freedom, resulting in an interior that reinterprets the traditional taverna through a contemporary Australian lens.

The design draws on the social rituals of Greek dining, where shared plates and wine form the centre of the experience. This ethos is expressed spatially through an open and flexible layout anchored by a prominent bar and a large custom wine fridge, both clad in stainless steel. The material is used extensively throughout the venue, introducing a crisp, reflective quality that contrasts with raw blockwork walls and exposed concrete surfaces.

A white-brick pizza oven provides a direct reference to taverna culture, its textured form set against a stainless steel surround that reinforces the dialogue between old and new. According to founder Alex Ponting, the use of steel introduces a contemporary edge while still allowing the space to feel grounded in tradition.

Seating plays a key role in shaping the atmosphere. An eclectic mix of mid-century designs, including pieces by Marcel Breuer, Harry Bertoia and Arne Jacobsen, is paired with simple timber stools. This layered approach adds visual interest while reinforcing a sense of informality and comfort. Vintage pendant and wall lights further soften the interior, introducing warmth against the harder material palette.

Natural light is carefully moderated through Venetian blinds and sheer curtains, responding to Cronulla’s coastal conditions. The broader material selection, including concrete, granite, terrazzo and timber, has been chosen for durability and the ability to age gracefully, echoing the patina of long-standing tavernas.

Positioned close to the beach, Homer Rogue Taverna embraces its relaxed setting while offering a refined yet approachable dining environment. The result is a space that feels equally suited to casual seaside visits and extended, leisurely meals.
