SEEK Headquarters Prioritises Acoustic Workplace Design

Creating a workplace that encourages collaboration while still supporting concentration and comfort was a key consideration in the design of SEEK’s global headquarters in Melbourne’s Cremorne precinct.

Designed by Hassell, with acoustic engineering support from Arup, the workplace project demonstrates how careful material specification can help address the challenges of modern commercial environments, particularly as open-plan and flexible workplaces continue to evolve.

The 20,000-square-metre headquarters was designed as an adaptable workplace that supports different ways of working, incorporating collaborative areas, social spaces, meeting zones and open work areas. However, with increased flexibility comes the challenge of managing sound, ensuring spaces remain connected without allowing excessive noise and reverberation to impact occupant comfort.

To support the acoustic performance of the interior, the project team specified Autex Acoustics’ Quietspace Panel throughout key areas of the workplace. Approximately 15,000 square metres of the acoustic solution was installed across spaces including work areas, the town hall space, atrium and social zones.

The acoustic panels were selected to help absorb unwanted sound and reduce reverberation, supporting a more comfortable environment for employees while integrating seamlessly into the overall interior design. Available in a range of colours and configurations, the system allowed acoustic performance to become part of the design language rather than a purely functional addition.

For architects and specifiers, the project highlights the growing importance of considering acoustic performance early in the design process. As commercial spaces become more focused on employee wellbeing and adaptable use, materials that contribute to comfort, functionality and long-term usability are becoming increasingly important specification considerations.

Beyond performance, material selection also supported sustainability objectives, with Autex Acoustics’ Quietspace Panel manufactured from polyester fibre, including recycled content. The product provides designers with an option that combines acoustic functionality with responsible material selection.

The SEEK headquarters demonstrates how collaboration between architects, engineers and manufacturers can deliver workplaces that respond to the changing expectations of commercial environments.
