KBDi member invited to judge awards program
Mal Corboy helps choose the best from the rest at the 2011 International Design Award
When you’ve won as many accolades for excellence in kitchen design as Mal Corboy, there’s only one thing to do — turn the tables and try your hand at judging design competitions rather than entering them. That’s exactly what the multi-award-winning designer, KBDi member and Hettich brand ambassador did earlier this month when he was an adjudicating panel member at the prestigious 2011 International Design Award, which was held on March 1-2 in Herford, Germany.
The first person in the Southern Hemisphere to be chosen to become a panel member, Mal joined four other expert judges from around the world to face the difficult task of selecting just five prize winners from thousands of entries to take out the top awards. The theme this year was “Design your Living Space”.
“I feel extremely privileged to be invited to be involved in such a prestigious international award,” said Mal. “For generations we’ve looked to Europe for our inspiration, but now it is our turn to be recognised as a nation of great design.”
The International Design Award was established by two family-run German companies — Hettich and REHAU — each with a shared vision of fostering young design students. The International Design Award has taken place every two years since its inception in 1997 and has become the world’s leading student design competition, with more than 1600 registrations from 20 countries around the world in 2009.
The competition also acts as a creative forum for monitoring trends, developing future-proof products and promoting innovation among design students.
Dave Angus, Marketing Manager of Hettich Australia says that the offer of a place in the 2011 International Design Award is not only an accolade for Mal Corboy, but also for Australasian kitchen design.
“A few years ago this would have been unlikely; this invitation shows that the rest of the world is waking up to the quality of our talent and fresh outlook of our designers.”
“I advise students to create their own distinct look within their area. The best design is borne out of passion and incites an emotion within the viewer,” says Mal. “Design is such an exciting field for students because there is so much freedom. They should be encouraged to go their own way.”
