Interior design is responding to changing expectations around wellbeing, identity and shared spaces. For 2027-28, warmer materials, authentic detailing and more intentional colour are shaping environments that feel restorative and purposeful. Explore six design directions and their potential application across different commercial projects.
Design that responds to people
Commercial interiors increasingly need to support emotional as well as functional outcomes. People are drawn to environments that feel restorative, authentic and relevant to their experience.
This is strengthening interest in crafted details, tactile materials and natural references. At the same time, bolder uses of colour, pattern and geometry allow designers to build identity, guide movement and create more memorable destinations.
Flooring direction
Flooring is moving towards greater warmth, tonal depth and authentic material character.
Blonde and honey timbers continue to offer flexibility, while richer mid-browns and deeper shades bring a more established feel. Natural grain, variation and gently weathered details introduce character, while timeless timber and stone aesthetics support projects designed for longevity.
Flooring can also play a more active role in spatial planning. Changes in colour, pattern, plank direction or material appearance can define zones, support wayfinding and distinguish areas without creating physical barriers.
Colour direction
Colour is increasingly used to influence atmosphere, experience and behaviour rather than simply provide decoration.
Layered neutrals and restorative tints can support calmer environments. Botanical greens and earth-based tones strengthen connections with nature, while deep indigo, charcoal and black add intimacy or drama. Strategic brights can energise social areas, reinforce a brand palette or highlight key destinations within a space.
Exploring design trends
At Karndean, our trends are more than design directions, they’re a lens through which we interpret and adapt to the changing needs of commercial spaces.
Restorative Minimalism
Restorative Minimalism creates calm, supportive environments through clean lines, diffused light and softly layered neutrals. Blonde-to-neutral tones, restrained details and soft finishes provide a quiet foundation, while subtle zoning helps organise the space without disrupting its cohesive, uncluttered character.

Ornamental Industrial
Ornamental Industrial refines the industrial aesthetic through stronger architectural detailing and a polished material palette. Brushed metals, concrete and streamlined forms create structure, while curves and considered lighting add softness. Smoked timbers, ash tones and stone visuals reinforce the architectural character and help define zones.

Quiet Luxe
Quiet Luxe communicates quality through restraint. Monochromatic schemes, sculptural furniture and architectural lighting create richness without excess. Mid-to-dark oak tones, weathered finishes and subtle tonal movement give flooring a refined presence, while directional laying patterns add detail without disrupting the calm, composed character.

Boho Botanical
Boho Botanical draws on craftsmanship, locality and natural materials to create warmth and authenticity. Woven fibres, ceramics and planting bring a tactile quality, while rustic timber, weathered finishes and stone visuals reinforce a grounded palette. Mixing wood and stone looks can also help define zones while maintaining a cohesive feel.

Retro Reimagined
Retro Reimagined uses nostalgia to create familiarity and emotional connection. Statement furniture, Art Deco references, richer colour and controlled pattern draw on familiar eras. Parquet, herringbone and directional layouts can introduce heritage detail or define focal areas, while honey and mid-brown flooring tones bring the warmth of the concept.

Elevated Play
Elevated Play uses colour and geometry to create energetic, engaging environments. Colour blocking, tonal gradients and bold focal points bring creativity, while clean forms keep the look intentional. Flooring becomes a navigational tool, using directional layouts, tonal changes and contrasting zones to guide movement and define functions.

Trends in Application
Restorative Minimalism brings calm and clarity to healthcare, senior living, education and workplace environments through soft neutrals, diffused light and quiet timber tones. Ornamental Industrial suits hospitality, retail and multi-residential spaces where stronger architectural detailing and refined material contrasts can create impact. Quiet Luxe lends itself to premium hospitality, executive workplaces and high-end residential projects, using restrained palettes and rich timber tones to convey sophistication.
Boho Botanical brings warmth and material honesty to wellness, hospitality and community settings, while Retro Reimagined adds familiarity and character to entertainment, retail and social spaces. Elevated Play is well suited to education, creative workplaces and community environments, using colour, geometry and flooring transitions to support energy, zoning and wayfinding.
