Embelton Flooring Elevates Sustainable Design at Merri Northcote

In a bold collaboration between MAB, Six Degrees Architects, and TCL Landscape Architecture, Merri Northcote is setting a new benchmark for residential developments in Melbourne’s inner north. Positioned alongside the natural beauty of Merri Creek, the precinct is more than just a collection of homes, it’s a carefully considered community where architecture, landscape, and interior design work in unison to create meaningful spaces for living.

Design Inspired by Place

Drawing inspiration from its surrounds, Merri Northcote is designed to sit harmoniously within its environment. Each home makes the most of its location, welcoming in natural light, capturing views of the creek, and ensuring spatial layouts that prioritise flexibility. Generous storage solutions, adaptable floor plans, and a variety of furnishing configurations cater to diverse lifestyles, from young professionals to families.

The development is composed of 99 social housing dwellings and 151 private residences, with privacy maintained through extensive landscaping. A pedestrianised ground level invites community interaction, encouraging connections not only between residents but also with the broader Merri Creek neighbourhood.

Interiors That Celebrate Materiality

The interiors are presented in four distinct design schemes, each defined by its material expression and fine detailing. One palette showcases recycled Messmate timber flooring, a sustainable choice that carries a strong sense of history and connection to place. It’s warm, tactile quality references Melbourne’s architectural heritage while contributing to the project’s eco-conscious approach.

Another interior scheme features Embelton Flooring’s Blonde Oak European Oak timber flooring, a premium surface that infuses each room with the uplifting warmth and natural character of European Oak. This choice reflects the site’s wooded landscape, bridging the indoors with the beauty of the surrounding environment. For architects and interior designers, it’s a clear example of how material selection can be both aesthetic and symbolic, tying a project’s narrative back to its setting.
