Brooklyn’s Greenpoint is home to Akari, a sauna that brings Japanese bathing rituals into a contemporary New York setting. Founded by Shayna Olsan and Luke Carstens, the 2,200-square-foot space transforms the traditional hot-cold-rest journey into an accessible and calming experience for locals.
The interior design, led by Erin Carstens in collaboration with architects Stroop Design and thermal consultant Kiel Moe, draws heavily on Japan’s onsens and sentōs.
A natural palette of materials guides the visitor from dark stone floor tiles through curtains into the all-gender locker, changing, and shower area. Here, wood panelling stretches across walls and doors, creating a warm, tactile environment that nods to traditional Japanese baths.
Bathrooms and shower areas are central to the experience, designed not just for function but for reflection and ritual. The small sauna on this level accommodates eight users, while a short flight of stairs leads to a larger sauna for up to 20. A skylight above the ash-wood benches casts soft natural light, enhancing the sense of calm and connection with the natural materials.
Intentional details extend to the cold plunge, surrounded by two-inch-square light green tiles that reference classic sentō design. These subtle touches reinforce the Japanese influence and demonstrate careful consideration of texture, colour, and material in every aspect of the bathing experience.
The ash-wood benches and light green plunge tiles highlight how small material choices can define the mood and authenticity of a bathroom-focused wellness space.
Olsan’s personal experience growing up with Japanese bathing culture informs the design philosophy. The space encourages members to slow down, take a moment for themselves, and incorporate this restorative ritual into daily life without the need for bookings. The combination of intimate scale, natural materials, and thoughtful bathroom and sauna design ensures Akari offers more than just wellness, presenting a quiet, contemplative retreat within the urban fabric.
