A celebration of talented young designers

Last Wednesday, 6th February, at the opening of the Australian International Furniture Fair at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, the winners of The Edge 2013 competition were announced.

From across the country, several young designers entered in their ideas with the hope to be given an opportunity in the tough and rigorous industry of design. Out of a record number of 38 finalists, four lucky young talents were credited across four individual categories — Green, Student, Concept and Commercial.

Toby Nowland won the Green Award with his Fold and Peg stool. Made from a material called EchoPanel that is produced from recycled and recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the stool requires no adhesives and when folded and pegged, is not only a stool but also a storage space for books and magazines. Ben Brayshaw won the Student Award with his Clam Chair design, which is as attractive as it is functional. The chair encompasses 19 small cushions which allow the chair to be folded and carried by its user, therefore easily transportable to the beach, park or anywhere you may feel like taking a seat. Stephanie Ng Hui Sien and her Halo Light won the Concept Award. Able to be manipulated into a variety of shapes and sizes to suit the consumer, the judges described the Halo Light as “versatile and innovative”. Ash Allen won the Commercial Award with his Dollop Light: a pendant made from organic materials and aesthetically inspired by a dollop of cream dripping from a ladle. It has a low-wattage LED light, and light is reflected from inside the shade, making it both beautiful and brilliant at the same time.

Becoming a rather distinguished platform for young designers to launch into the industry, The Edge competition hosted a judging panel of well-known names, including Jan Henderson, associate publisher of Archmedia; Lisa Green, editor of Australian House and Garden magazine; and Marc Schamburg, director of Alvisse and Schamvburg/Zenith Interiors.

The Edge competition is held every year and participants must be designers with less than five years’ experience in the industry with a proof of business registration or enrolment/graduation from a relevant tertiary design course.
