Alex Milne Introduction April 2011

It’s design awards season again which means that DESIGN20eleven is only a short while away. For those of you thinking about entering this year’s awards program, KBDi Director Simon Hodgson’s one-on-one with Brandon Gien, one of Australia’s leading authorities on design awards, is essential reading. Brandon reveals how entering programs like DESIGN20eleven can boost your profile and offers advice on promoting your win. On that note, have you submitted your entry? Entries are open until 29 May. Designers, go to www.kbdi.au to upload your kitchen and bathroom entries now!

Contracts, fees and charges is a topic that often invokes discussion among designers. In this edition, we delve into a thought-provoking read, as Simon’s article explores the many reasons why designers should be rewarded for their designs and services, a subject that Artizan Cabinet’s Russell Kelly also touches on in this month’s “Ask an expert”.

We chat with Andrew Cronin, the man at the helm of Smeg Australia, about the company’s new direction and what we can expect to see from the brand in the future. Smeg’s “Designers Who Lunch” event series is  back for another year; check out our What’s On section for more information.

Wrapping up this edition, we bring you the latest trends from Europe thanks to the team from Sydney Kitchens, who recently travelled to Cologne for the Internationale Möbelmesse (IMM) design show. From ultra-thin benchtops to savvy hardware and kitchens wired to provide aural and visual delights, you’ll be enthralled by this tantalising taste of what lies ahead in the wonderful world of kitchen design.

— Alex Milne, KBDi Executive Director, and the Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly team
