Don't miss out on this years' Garage Sale Trail

After the booming success of the 2011 Garage Sale Trail, the multiple-award-winning national event is due to take place once again on May 5, 2012.
The concept is simple — an enormous garage sale, open to anyone and everyone — and all are welcomed to participate: households, local businesses, cultural institutions, charities, schools, libraries and community groups.

Co-founder Andrew Valder announced, “We learnt from last year’s program that Garage Sale Trail isn’t just about households getting involved. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to make some money, raise money for a cause and make positive community connections.
It’s all about discovery and sustainability: discovering pre-loved and hand-made goods, discovering and connecting with locals in your local area and of course keeping a whole load of stuff out of landfill.”
“You don’t even need a garage; just host a sale with friends, neighbours or a community group,” added Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP. “Buying something second-hand instead of a new product saves you money, saves natural resources and reduces the amount of rubbish going to landfill.”

The project initially took place in Bondi in 2010 and has been growing ever since. It has progressed from a small garage sale in one suburb, initially only aimed at households, to being adopted by a variety of organisations and groups such as local businesses, cultural groups, community groups, makers and creators and charities. It is now a national event that, in 2011, had 3000 participating households and over 75000 shoppers.

This years’ garage sale was announced on Tuesday, March 13 at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney. Valder and Nichols welcomed guests to the official launch of the garage sale and Lord Mayor Clover Moore made a formal address at the launch. This year there are exciting new developments to the Sale Trail as well as an impressive line up of new ambassadors.

Among the new ambassadors is fashion designer Marnie Skillings, who announced, “This program is great for the wider fashion community. For those who want to clear out their wardrobe, for brands who want to hold sample sales and to aspiring fashion designers and makers and creators who can use this as a way of showcasing their talents. It’s also a great way to nab a great find.”
