Growing Trends: Are You Up-To-Date?

Patricia La Torre, KBDi Australian Certified Kitchen Designer of the Year 2013, and Sam Robinson, KBDi Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year 2013, give their professional advice and opinion about the growing trends in kitchen and bathroom designs, how these have changed over the past few years, and what trends we can expect to see more of.

Kitchen Trends by Patricia La Torre CKD Au.

  • A strong move or focus on a "lifestyle" and "living environment" that promotes "ease of living", "comfort", "simplicity" "less stress".
  • Clients are simplifying their lives and their surroundings, and are far more inclined to want to be surrounded by their "favourite things".
  • People are more open to incorporating colour, textures, timbers, graphics, art or photo images.
  • Vibrant & fresh greens, retro oranges, purples, and particularly industrial yellow.
  • Beautiful timber veneers with linear detail combined with gloss finishes.
  • Graphics in panels, glass splashbacks, tiles, etc.
  • Design is equally focused on function, ease of access/use, efficient storage solutions
  • Families with young families are requesting computer workstations in the kitchen or surrounding area so children can be supervised
  • Foodies and the slow food followers are very specific about their kitchen design. Function is paramount, the "look" is essential.

Bathroom Trends by Sam Robinson.

  • Bathrooms now feature a ‘spa-like’ ambience for our hectic lives.
  • The TV is often featured, sometimes placed discreetly behind mirrors.
  • Showers are large, generally frameless and in there is a growing trend to partially or totally remove all shower walls, making the entire tiled bathroom a shower.
  • Textures and surfaces are softening with more organic shapes and rounded edges.
  • There is a growing trend to omit doors and have the Ensuite incorporated into the bedroom.
  • Opaque glass features predominantly in windows and as room dividers or walls and doors, providing diffused light.
  • Reflective surfaces such as high gloss tiles, mirrors and cabinetry are replacing the light absorbing matt finish products of recent times.
  • Rugs are becoming sought after accessories.
  • Bright accent colours will be used more in both highlights and accessories.
  • Warmth & texture are the dominating characteristics. Timber, stone and a variety of natural products are popular finishes that provide luxurious earthy ambience.
  • Soft close toilet seats are a must.
  • Body sprays, rain showers and hand held sprays allow for personal choice.
  • Louvers are making a comeback to bathrooms, and fit perfectly with the soft industrial genre that is making headway into our design world.
