Marc Newson teams with Smeg for the best in kitchen design
Australia’s Marc Newson, internationally acclaimed as the most accomplished and influential designer of his generation, has designed a range of kitchen appliances for the Italian Smeg brand.
The collaboration with Newson has further enhanced the unique reputation of Smeg as the only appliance brand to work with leading architects and designers to ensure its appliances deliver the true essence of its philosophy — Technology with Style.
The Marc Newson range comprises electric pyrolytic and vapour clean ovens, gas hobs and induction cooktops that exude the unmistakeable style of the designer — smooth, flowing lines, energetic and distinctive use of colour and intuitive functionality.
The Newson thermosealed multifunction ovens embody the Newson love of colour and admiration of enamel as a durable, contemporary finish. Beautiful, on-trend rich yellow, pistachio green and peacock blue are the three enamel versions while the matt black and stylish white are finished in a completely flat sheet of non-reflective glass that creates a depth and luminosity to the overall look. A beautiful satin stainless-steel finish is also available.
The FP610 ovens feature a large touch control panel that is both intuitive and user-friendly. As Newson says, “Let’s face it; who reads instruction manuals? I don’t. I bin them immediately.”
The coloured, pyrolytic ovens have eight cooking functions, including a rotisserie, two pyrolytic self-cleaning functions, an extra-large oven capacity of 79 litres and the unique Thermoseal non-vented cooking system, which ensures a perfectly controlled cooking cavity. The black, white and stainless-steel ovens feature nine functions and have a vapour clean mode instead of pyrolysis.
All ovens carry impressive energy-consumption credentials, having exceeded the highest Class A European energy rating.
The equally eye-catching 75cm gas cooktops are manufactured from a single piece of steel and feature five burners with highly efficient vertical flame technology (these are far more energy-efficient than the conventional “flower” burners that lose about 60 per cent of energy to the atmosphere).
Again, simplicity and intuition are key — the layout of the beautiful silver or brass control knobs mirror the placement of the gas burners.
One of Newson’s pet hates is that most hobs, and appliances in general, are complex to operate. “One of the things I was determined to do was position the controls in exactly the same layout as the burners. No silly maps describing which thing corresponds to what,” said Newson.
And seven induction cooktops complete the Newson design aesthetic for Smeg — black frameless glass in four sizes: 30, 60, 70 and 90cm — with forward-positioned touch controls and eye-catching graphics in grey, gold or brick red that, again, are understood at a glance.
Features of the Newson induction include 15 temperature settings for each zone, automatic pan recognition, power boost, child safety lock, safety cut-out and 99-minute timer.
Another clever feature is the highly effective stop-in-temp-setting. This holds and maintains the temperature at the desired level.
Smeg’s Marc Newson kitchen appliances are both edgy and ground-breaking, in terms of design, while being truly beautiful, user-friendly appliances, which are being heralded as a working piece of art for the kitchen.
The Marc Newson range of kitchen appliances from Smeg is available nationally from selected appliance specialists.
