A South Australian icon is being reimagined for a new era, with JPE Design Studio leading a major revitalisation of the heritage-listed Thebarton Theatre precinct in Adelaide’s west.
Affectionately known as “Thebby”, the beloved live entertainment venue first opened in 1928 as Thebarton Town Hall and has long held a special place in the city’s cultural identity.
In 2021, JPE was appointed to masterplan the entire precinct, encompassing the theatre, adjoining civic buildings, surrounding plaza and carpark. The redevelopment aims to address decades of functional challenges while preserving the historic character and atmosphere that make Thebby unique.
The theatre narrowly avoided demolition when a new highway was planned nearby, ultimately saved by a government decision to tunnel beneath rather than build over the existing structure. This reprieve presented the opportunity to breathe new life into the venue and modernise its facilities for contemporary audiences.
Breaking ground in March 2024, Stage 1 of the masterplan introduces three key interventions: relocating truck loading for event bump-in and bump-out to the rear of the site, opening the corner of the block to create a landscaped pedestrian plaza, and adding a new two-storey entry pavilion with expanded amenities and a front bar. The new loading dock, equipped with a hydraulic lift and direct stage access, resolves long-standing logistical constraints, while freeing the street frontage for public gathering and event activity.
Inside, the design delivers a series of upgrades including dedicated bathrooms, improved circulation, new timber flooring, and the restoration of decorative plasterwork and heritage façades. Importantly, the works introduce equitable access to the first floor via a new lift for the first time in the theatre’s history.
Architecturally, JPE has drawn inspiration from the art deco origins of the original building, pairing bold geometric forms and luxurious materials such as travertine tile, zinc and brass detailing, with feature lighting that evokes the glamour of early cinema.
“The greatest way to preserve a heritage asset is to adapt it to meet the needs of today’s users,” the practice said. The reimagined Thebarton Theatre will ensure that one of South Australia’s most treasured venues continues to captivate audiences for generations to come.
