Sustainable House Day 2014

Sustainable homeowners are opening their doors around the country this September to inspire and educate others on sustainable living.
An initiative of the Australian Solar Council, this event has seen more than 1000 homes opened to more than 100,000 Australians since it started in 2001. This free grassroots initiative was developed to battle the growing environmental impact of Australian homes and generate peer-to-peer education on eco-friendly practices.
Now in its 13th year, Sustainable House Day 2014 is a chance for homeowners to showcase the hard work they put into designing, building, improving and managing their environmentally friendly homes. The general public are invited to tour more than 150 homes across the country and learn the benefits of integrating renewable energy, recycling and other sustainable practices into their home and everyday lifestyle.
With Aussie households contributing up to 13 tonnes of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere yearly, Australia’s environmental footprint requires national attention. Additionally, Australian households draw 73,000 buckets of water a year. The initiative aims to promote sustainable activities that are easily implemented by the wider community and will reduce our environmental impact in the long-term.
Sustainable House Day 2014 is being held over two weekends on Sunday 7 and Sunday 14 September 2014 between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Homeowners from around Australia will give visitors inside tips on green living — explaining what worked and what didn’t and the benefits of a sustainable home.
