NSW government announces new metro stations to combine with residential development

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced seven new railway stations for the government’s Sydney Metro West project, which will soon usher in a boom of apartment and mixed-use construction.

The new locations revealed as part of the third stage announcement are Burwood North, Five Dock, Sydney Olympic Park, the Bays Precinct Westmead, Parramatta and North Strathfield.

Developer lobby group the Urban Taskforce says the project will unlock “tens of billions of dollars” in housing development.

Urban Taskforce chief executive Chris Johnson said that the announcement was highly anticipated.

“The development sector has been planning for this announcement and the certainty it provides could spark a generation of construction-related employment.”

“It is absolutely critical that this massive investment in transport infrastructure and capacity building is complemented by plans for appropriate development around the new railway stations, in addition to existing rail and metro stations,” Johnson said.

Construction work will begin next year, preparing the sites for major tunnelling works in 2022 and the stations opening to the public by 2030.

Costing for the West line has not been released.

The NSW Government said the project will create around 10,000 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs and ‘bust congestion’.

It will investigate the location of a new CBD station and the feasibility of metro stations in Pyrmont and Rydalmere.

The suggestion of a Pyrmont station was strongly backed by Sydney Business Chamber executive director Katherine O’Regan.

“Along with the seven stations on the table, a stop at Pyrmont is a necessity as the successful revitalisation of the Pyrmont peninsular is dependent on having better transport to bring service workers, visitors and tourists to the new western gateway to the CBD,” O’Regan said.

Already Sydney Metro projects have led to a boom in apartment towers and mixed-use developments around stations.

This week the government’s development arm Landcom released plans for as many as 5600 homes to be constructed in buildings up to 21 storeys high around two new rail station precincts in Kellyville and Bella Vista.

The station precinct proposals show thousands of new dwellings will be spread across terraces and taller apartment blocks in the area, which will also include a town centre and new school.

Around Cherrybrook station 61 towers were proposed earlier this month.
