TH Brown Furniture

A family legacy of style, unique craftsmanship and design appeal to new generations of those who love fine furniture. Iconic TH Brown furniture is beautiful, each piece hand-crafted and timeless. The pieces work across many design styles, but the style TH Brown is most known for is mid-century modern.

For Simon and Toni Brown, the story of TH Brown’s inception is as time-honoured as the furniture itself. It dates back to over 110 years ago in Adelaide, beginning with Simon’s grandfather Thomas H Brown. The baton was handed to Simon’s father, Peter, from the 1950s to the 1980s. “Peter was a highly respected designer and created a range of pieces that unequivocally defined Australian mid-century furniture design,” say Toni and Simon.

From age 12, Simon helped to bring his father’s designs to life. He was captivated with the design and manufacturing process of the family business, and now the heritage continues. In 2015, Toni and Simon were planning a renovation of their Phillip Cox-designed mid-century modern home and Simon thought of the iconic mid-century modern pieces his father Peter had designed.
“I realised they’d be perfect for our new home,” he says.

Two years later, this creative duo proudly relaunched the TH Brown brand. The first piece was the internationally celebrated Danish bar stool. It was a runaway success.
Simon describes his design style as based on simplicity and clean lines; it’s form that meets function in a sustainable, ethical way. “It promotes a long product life — make it once and use it for generations to come as an heirloom,” he enthuses. Toni’s design bravura is mid-century modern. “But I like to combine those clean lines and simplicity aesthetic with bright and vibrant colour,” she says.

Simon says they draw some of their inspiration from the back catalogue of TH Brown pieces. “It’s a treasure trove of great design and an amazing Australian manufacturing story — a testament to my father’s design skill,” he comments.

Toni’s favourite piece right now is the Outdoor Trend lounge. “I love the black and white stripe; we have it in our pool area and every time I look across, it makes me smile,” she says. When asked to nominate his favourite piece, Simon says it’s an impossible question to answer. “But I can say that in our home we have the Martelle bar stool and Aquarius coffee table as well as the Outdoor Trend lounge,” he notes.

Their plan for the coming years is to continue to re-issue other iconic pieces from their enormous back catalogue. October saw the launch of the Rondo Pouffe table (also known as the Fondue, Propeller or Pouffe table).
