Construction activity is ramping up across Townsville as the Queensland Government expands its social and affordable housing pipeline, backed by a record $5.7 billion investment in new housing over the next four years.
The funding, announced in the 2026-27 Queensland Budget as part of the government’s long-term housing strategy, will support the delivery of 6,500 social and affordable homes currently underway across the state and contribute to a target of 53,500 social and community homes by 2044.
Townsville is a key beneficiary, with 253 social and affordable homes currently under construction across the region. This includes a 13-home social housing development at Kelso and a further 24 social homes under construction at Rasmussen. The government said an additional 108 homes have already been delivered in the Townsville area since the current administration was elected.
Alongside new housing supply, the Budget allocates $21.6 million to frontline housing and homelessness services across North Queensland. The funding is intended to help vulnerable residents secure long-term accommodation while providing access to specialist support services.
Minister for Housing Sam O’Connor said the investment formed part of the government’s response to growing housing demand across Queensland.
“Every Queenslander deserves a place to call home. That’s why we’re delivering another record investment into building new social and community housing,” he said.
“We have more than 250 social and affordable homes now underway in Townsville, building on the 108 homes we have delivered in the area since we were elected. This project at Kelso is a great example of how we are getting safe and secure homes off the ground where they’re needed most.”
Woollam Constructions Regional Manager Townsville Mark Lovelady said the company was proud to be delivering the Kelso project, which will provide 13 new homes for people requiring housing support.
“This development represents a significant investment in housing infrastructure and community wellbeing,” he said.
“Through strong collaboration between government and industry, the project will create sustainable housing opportunities while fostering inclusive and connected communities.”
The Queensland Government said the expanded housing program aims to increase housing supply while strengthening support services for vulnerable Queenslanders across the state.
