The honest answer to what underfloor heating costs is that it depends, but the underfloor heating cost per square metre follows clear patterns once you know what drives it. System type, area, floor covering, new build or renovation, location and whether you install professionally or DIY all move the number, so here is a plain-spoken guide to budgeting with confidence.
Electric underfloor heating cost per square metre
Approximate supply and install prices, including the thermostat and a standard connection by a licensed electrician, run from $100 to $160 per m² for a thin heating mat and $120 to $200 per m² for screed cable.
Carpet mats sit at $80 to $130, under timber mats at $100 to $160 and slab cable at $60 to $100 per m². A 5 m² bathroom with a thin mat typically lands around $600 to $900 fully installed.
Hydronic underfloor heating cost per square metre
Hydronic costs more upfront. In-screed systems run roughly $150 to $250 per m² and in-slab roughly $60 to $100 per m², both excluding the heat source.
An Intaflo heat pump adds around $6,000 to $10,000 installed, depending on size, and a 200 m² new build with in-screed pipe, manifold and heat pump typically runs $30,000 to $50,000.
Hydronic is recommended from about 80 m², with 40 m² the practical minimum; below that, electric is usually more economical.
What underfloor heating costs to run
Electric runs at about 2 to 5 cents per m² per hour, so a 4 m² bathroom heated four hours a day costs roughly 45 to 70 cents a day, or about $41 to $64 across a 13-week winter.
A medium 160 m² home on hydronic with a heat pump is estimated at $1,200 to $1,500 a year, citing Sustainability Victoria, with solar reducing that further.
Thermostats and control
Budget about $250 to $350 for a Wi-Fi programmable thermostat supplied and installed, or $200 to $280 for a standard model, both including a floor sensor.
Comfort Heat Australia estimates that heating only when rooms are in use can cut running costs by 30 to 50 per cent compared with continuous operation.
Ways to reduce the cost
Small design choices add up. Schedule heating around occupancy, and around solar generation where available.
Insulate well to lower the thermostat duty cycle, zone the project so only occupied rooms are heated, and choose dense coverings such as porcelain tile, which hold warmth after the system cycles off.
Installing during a renovation or retile, when labour is lowest, is another smart way to keep costs down.
Is it worth the cost?
For most households, yes. Electric systems need no maintenance, with no filters, moving parts or service calls to budget for.
Bathrooms make the strongest value case, while whole-home hydronic with a heat pump suits cold climates and larger homes.
